Shenandoah Valley, Virginia— A beautiful Tannat from Sommelier Lee Campbell to win over skeptics of Virginia wine! Big and bold, but finessed— Inviting fruity nose, with blackberry, plum, mocha, leather on the palate. Full-bodied with round, soft tannins.

From the producer—“Some wine folks dismiss certain wines because they're too intense or unruly, but grapes like Tannat and Petit Manseng, which may tend towards rusticity, perform really well in Virginia’s wetter climate. We get caught up in the idea of “fine” wine and that only certain grapes can be in that category, but this dismisses their ability to consistently make delicious wine in a place with different growing conditions than where “fine wine” is traditionally made. Alright, we know, this is some pretty serious talk for a wine called “Trot Rock”, so we’ll stop there. Is that like Yacht Rock, you say? Yes, yes, it probably is, and it’s also like some delicious Tannat.

How We Made It: We used a technique we learned a while back from the folks at Ellsworth Wines who work in the Sierra Foothills in California. We took ⅓ of the grapes and directly pressed them, like a white wine, which theoretically removed 33% of the tannins. You would also theorize that ⅓ of the color was lost, but we’re not really seeing that! In fact the wine has a decent amount of tannin, though nothing like it would have had if we had macerated all the grapes. The wine was aged in neutral French oak and bottled on July, 23rd of 2024 with no sulfur or other additions.”
