Okayama, Japan— Shine Muscat is a premium table grape variety highly popular both in Japan and internationally. At Domaine Tetta, winemaking with Shine Muscat began in earnest with the 2022 vintage. The winery has been exploring ways to highlight the grape’s signature muscat aroma while compensating for its naturally low acidity and light body by carefully controlling volatile acidity. For the 2023 vintage, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chenin Blanc were blended to achieve overall balance. 8 months aging in neutral oak. 85% Shine Muscat, 6% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Riesling, 4% Chenin Blanc. Aromatic lychee, guava, pear, honey with vegetal undertones on the palate. Low S02.

Domaine Tetta cultivates eight hectares in Okayama, Japan using innovative white vinyl covers to protect against heavy rain and intense summer heat, creating an optimal environment for grape varieties like Chardonnay, Muscat, Bailey A and Koshu. This area, known for its limestone-rich soils, diurnal shifts, and humidity clearing winds, offers ideal conditions for low-intervention winegrowing. Ryuta Takahashi, the founder, transitioned from limestone mining to winemaking in 2009 after discovering abandoned vineyards in his hometown. Determined to revive the land’s agricultural legacy, he established Domaine Tetta, prioritizing on-site production from vine to bottle. Unlike much of Japanese wine, which often relies on imported grape concentrate, Tetta represents a true “Domaine” approach. The wines embody the essence of Tetta’s unique terroir and Takahashi’s vision for a sustainable viticultural future.
