Castilla y León, Spain— A blend of 70% Juan Garcia, a native grape to the region, and 30% Tempranillo. A dry, medium-bodied red full of pure fruit and balanced by earthy undertones, crunchy tannins and soft acidity. Notes of cherry, blackberry, pepper, dried herbs, with subtle earthy undertones.
In 2016 Thyge Benned Jensen quit his day job in Copenhagen and bought vineyards in Arribes, Spain— a rural area on the edge of the frontier in every way— and discovered a hidden gem in the local grape variety Juan Garcia. The vines are 10-100 years old. He vinifies hand-selected grapes in a 500 year old granite cave, largely in whole clusters, with no additives and minimal (or no) sulfur. For every six bottles sold, one tree is planted in the Bodega Frontio forest in Spain.
