Eugene, Oregon— Wonderful single-vineyard, skin-contact field-blend from Erratic Oaks Vineyard in the Willamette Valley that sees a month in amphora. Mostly Pinot Gris, with some Gewürztraminer and Riesling. Deep golden apple, ripe peach, roasted nuts and hint of tender herbs. Fresh, but structured with delicate tannins. Made by Melanie Mikell in a 10,000 square-foot urban winery in downtown Eugene!
Melanie Mikell grew up in the swamps of Florida, hating the weather but loving weird food. After getting a BS in biology, an MFA in creative writing, and a decade of fine dining experience, she moved to Oregon. Working with Antiquum Winery in the Willamette Valley, Melanie learned that the connection between farming animals and farming grapes is both inspiring and the most obvious way to approach intentional, slow, holistic winemaking. In 2018, she began working with Craig Weicker, founder of Civic, whose name evokes the Latin civis, citizen, and civitas in celebration of both Eugene's place within the greater agricultural ecosystem of the surrounding valleys, and as an interactive experience in urban revitalization. The winery is focused on organic and biodynamic grape sourcing and fermentation in Oregon-made terracotta amphorae (Novum) made by Andrew Beckham in the Chehalem Mountains.
