Beaujolais, France— Georges Descombes is one of the premiere vignerons in Beaujolais. His winemaking is very traditional; using native yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, and very little sulfur added at bottling. The 2023 Morgon shows a bright, vivid red/black color with earth, violet and citrus notes mingling with lovely raspberry and blackberry aromas. The palate is ripe, silky and well-structured with fresh, velvety raspberry, cherry and blackberry fruit, with earth and mineral notes bringing texture and length to the sappy, lingering finish. This is a beautiful Morgon to serve cool with farm chicken, grilled pork and lamb, cow cheeses and charcuterie over the next 4 - 5 years.
Georges Descombes, has been dubbed the unofficial fifth member of the likewise legendary 'Gang of Four'. Georges is located in Vermont, a teeny hamlet in Villié-Morgon, and in his teens worked alongside his vigneron father in the vines, as well as spending time working with a local bottling company. On his travels hopping from estate to estate, he had the chance to try a bottle of Lapierre, and it cemented his goal of making wines of exceptional purity and elegance, a goal he went on to achieve pretty spectacularly. When he took over in 1988, he immediately began converting the vineyards to organic practices, and these days he oversees 15.5 hectares spread across five AOCs. All his cuvées are made using whole bunches, just a tiny dose of sulphur at bottling and only a light filtration for the young vine cuvées. Georges likes to let his wines hang out in bottle before releasing, up to a year later than most of his colleagues. These are truly stunning expressions of Beaujolais, and punch way above their price point.
